My mom hired College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving West Pittsburgh to load her moving truck with her things from a two bedroom apartment for an interstate move on Sept. 14, 2024. We were told the movers were “professionally trained” and would handle everything carefully. When they arrived, the movers were polite and efficient with packing the boxes, and nothing inside was broken. However, things went downhill with the furniture.
Despite being told they could use U-Haul blankets, old comforters, and towels we provided, they failed to wrap most of the wooden furniture – we did not discover this until we got to my mom’s new apartment. Most of the pieces were packed right up against one another or even on top of one another with no protection in between. We had been assuming they were using the U-haul blankets, which were in the truck when they got started, since they were not using the comforters and blankets we had piled off to the side of the apartment for them. It was not until the truck was nearly full that I had gone down to see the progress and noticed that some things were not covered. It was at that time that I asked if they needed more blankets and they told me they had run out. I immediately got them more blankets and instructed them to cover anything I could see that was not covered. Unfortunately, I could not see that many things already loaded were not covered. When we unpacked the truck we discovered that the packers used ¾ of the u-haul blankets on two small cloth loveseats, which were packed first, and then just started loading things with no protection. They did not mention to anyone that they needed more blankets, even when I asked them every 20-30 minutes if they needed anything and many blankets went unused. They also lacked tools to disassemble furniture, resulting in damage to multiple pieces. For example, they scratched a wooden dining table while moving it out of the balcony (because it wouldn’t fit out the front door with the legs on) and didn’t say anything, we ended up seeing it, but they never said, “oh hey sorry we scratched this”. This table also broke during the move because they did not remove the legs, then packed it with a heavy wooden cedar chest on top, but only on one side – nothing was on the other side. This unbalanced weight caused one of the feet of the pedal legs to break, something we did not discover until we got to my mom’s new apartment.
In addition to finding the table was broken, as I mentioned earlier, when unpacking, we discovered all the furniture was damaged—scratched, dented, or gouged. Items were stacked carelessly with no protection between them. Most items were packed without any blanket on it at all, just wood rubbing against wood, wood stacked on wood, etc. We had no idea things had been packed this way or we would have told the staff to cover them with the blankets we had, as many were left over and unused. Even the College Hunks team in Virginia who did the unpacking said it was the worst packing job they’d ever seen. They told us that the staff had ignored the best practices and basic guidelines of the company and did not follow the training that is given at all. They told us this would void any waiver we may have signed. They also took photos of everything that was damaged and told us they would back us if we needed confirmation of the poor work that was rendered. However, they told us that because it is a franchise, they could not do anything on their end to help us in getting items fixed, replaced, or compensated for.
My mom contacted the Pittsburgh franchise, but they were unapologetic, citing a waiver that they claimed absolved them of responsibility for damage during transit. However, the damage wasn’t due to the transit but to poor packing. The lack of care and professionalism from both the moving staff and office staff was shocking. We do NOT recommend this company if you value your belongings. See the photos included which show how the truck was packed and the some of the damage that resulted.

Extremely capable, courteous, and friendly service. Excellent value, too. Ronald and Adrian were the “Hunks” assigned for hte job, and were so helpful packing up and moving my older brother’s apartment. They moved all objects with care and made a difficult task very manageable. Thanks again!

Brandon and Adam were great. I scheduled a pickup last minute and everything was in multiple locations. They arrived early, gathered everything up, and even moved a chest of drawers from my garage to the second floor in no time. I will definitely use them again in the future.

I was in a bind because I was moving out of town and had a bunch of left over junk I didn’t have time to donate/scrap. Brendan B and Adam S were awesome. On time, professional, helpful, and accommodating. Definitely would recommend them to anyone.
